Guitar Center's - King of the Blues
Hi friends and welcome to Song of the Week #2. This week I took the first track from Guitar Center's "King of the Blues" backing tracks CD. There are some different ways to improvise over this progression, but here are a few tips.
The chords in the progression are E7, A7, and B7. If we are playing an E Mixolydian scale over the E7 chord, when the progression changes to the A7 chord we should play the Em pentatonic scale for a blues transition.
Also when we are improvising over a dominant seventh chord, we can use other scales diatonically to make our Mixolydian mode shapes. If we are soloing over an E7 chord for example, then we can play an A major scale, or a B Dorian, and it will also be the same notes as the E Mixolydian.
We can also play an Abm7(b5) arpeggio to solo over an E7 dominant chord. In the following video I show you a few guitar phrases in a country blues style so you can get an idea of how I might solo over this song. This is just improvisation but when connecting your modes and arpeggios it is important to remember to try and grab the closest note.
Video Yourself Playing A Solo And Post It To This Page
If you want to post yourself playing a solo over the "King of the Blues" track and post it to this page please do!!!
This will inspire others to practice the guitar licks and scales, and your improvisation will add to the ideas, so don't be shy and give it a try!!!
