Before I bought my Brevillier pastel pencils set in 24 colors, i never used such kind of material. This technique is quite different from the classic colorpencil or watercolor pencil. I already know pastel pencils doesn't look fine on white paper but looks brilliant on dark papers like blue or black.
The other problem is sharpening. Never use any kind of pencil sharpeners, because they'll break the tip. Rather use glasspaper or very sharp paper-knife and use it very carefully. Be also careful with smudging, it's very easy to smudge with your finger, even if you don't want it. If you are ready with your picture, put it behind a sheet of glass or package it in cellophane that protects it from more smudging. Do not use fixative liquids, they are smelly and expensive and they can change colors in a disadvantageous way.
I drew a freehand, decorative mandorla today. Yes, this is a mandorla, not a mandala, because it has a plum-seed or eye shape, not a circle.
