Sometimes the human nature really surprises me. I keep expecting that the values of mutual cooperation, kindness and unity are something that are innate to us, but time and again, I get disappointed.
The more I look, the more I find that people are more interested in destruction rather than creation. Well, ok, that might be too extreme. Not many are this way, thankfully, but some are and unfortunately they are the ones making all the decisions.
We have all seen, read or heard about countless wars that humanity has waged on itself over totally nonsensical reasons and even after losing so much, we haven’t learned our lesson, as we just continue to do so without a thought.
Now, it seems like we are preparing to spread this to an entirely new frontier that we haven’t even begun to build yet. I am talking about space and potential future space warfare.
A Space Force - Because War On Earth Is Not Enough!
Today, I read an article that President Trump had announced that he wants to create an entirely new branch of the US military which will deal with the “matters of space” named the Space Force.
This might surely remind you of all the sci-fi movies that we have watched over the years where space wars are shown in great detail and great CGI, either among ourselves or with alien beings!
Basically, a space force would ensure control over the space around Earth and maybe even further, in the distant future, just like in the movies. If more countries begin doing this, it could easily escalate tensions off-world too, as if they weren’t enough down here on Earth!
I can’t help but ask if this is even remotely necessary. We haven’t even begun full fledged space exploration with a constant human presence in other celestial bodies and we are already thinking about the militarisation of space? Is this really who we are as a species?
What About Using The Money For Good?
In one of my previous articles, I had said that if we began using all the money that we spend on militaries and wars for the welfare of people, it could actually change the planet in a few short years.
The United States already spends over $600 billion which is more than the next seven countries combined! And the creation of a space force will only increase that number!
Imagine this money or even a part of it, to solve the pressing problems on Earth. I am of the opinion that we should definitely be spending resources for space exploration but certainly not space warfare! And that too in a time period when we haven’t even begun space exploration properly, in the human history.
Thankfully, any such Space Force will be needed to be cleared by the Congress and they might not be very keen on doing that. I mean there is already an international treaty in place that bans any militarisation of space! Why then would we need a space fleet?
