Pope Francis added a fourth method to declare someone holy, the Vatican announced yesterday. The new norm is for those who have lived as faithful Catholics all their lives and who have accepted a premature death for the sake of others. So far, to be considered for canonization, it was necessary for the person to have been a martyr, to have lived a heroic life or - rarely used - to have had an immaculate reputation. The pope issued the new law under his own initiative, an act known as motu proprio, to add the fourth method.
