The avastha (state) of a graha (planet) indicates nature of fructification of karma. The grahas results are felt during their dashas. The graha avastha (state) indicates many things.
Types:
Bala: Child (Result: 25%)
Kumara: Adolescent (Result: 50%)
Yuva: Adult/Youth (Result: 100%)
Vriddha: Old age (Result: 50%)
Mrita: Dead/Late (Result: 0%-10%)
The order of these avasthas is different for odd and even signs.
In Odd Rashi:
0-6 degree ---- Child
7-12 degree ---- Adolescent
13- 18 degree ---- Adult/Youth
19-24 degree ---- Old age
25-30 degree ---- Dead/Late
In Even Rashi:
0-6 degree ---- Dead/Late
7-12 degree ---- Old age
13- 18 degree ---- Adult/Youth
19-24 degree ---- Adolescent
25-30 degree ---- Child
