Being happy is not difficult but unfortunately, most people don’t manage it. They think it is going to happen to them. When we were 5 years of age, we were quite happy. Just look one of your photos from your childhood... When you are 5 years old and so happy, by the time you are 30 you should have been ecstatic if you had grown. What actually is hopping most of the time, by the time of being 30, most people are mess themselves in so many different ways.
Knife in shaky hand
Sadhguru gives wonderful metaphor. He explains it as situation as you have been given a sharp knife, but you don’t have a steady enough hand. If you have a steady hand, the sharp knife would be a wonderful instrument. If you don’t have a steady hand, you will keep cutting yourself. Being happy when the knife is constantly cutting into you is very difficult for sure.
You think that suffering came to you from the external world. However, our nature and this life work on SELF HELP. The irony is that people torture themselves without realizing. They are so good at self-torturing.
Therefore, happiness is neither easy or difficult because there are no states like this. There is no capsule of happiness and capsule of unhappiness. In the same situation, one moment joyful, one moment miserable, another moment some other way. This only shows that you are not whole and stable enough. This is the evolutionary problem. Your intellect and your awareness evolve ahead of your physiology.
Manage your faculties
Humans are similar to chimpanzee but in intelligence, they are very far. So what actually happens is that your own intelligence is turning against you. You don’t need to learn to manage your happiness, you must learn to manage your faculties. People are suffering two most important faculties of mind, your MEMORY and your IMAGINATION. That sets you apart from other creatures. What happened 50 years ago you can still remember and you can project what may happen in the next 100 years. Memory and imagination are two basic faculties which make us human, and on top of the evolutionary pile, this is what people are suffering. What happened 10 years ago, they are still suffering, what may happen the day after tomorrow they are already suffering. What is going on here? This is not suffering life. If you feel like this, you are suffering from memory and imagination.
Happiness and misery are no accidents
Just LOOK AT YOURSELF. That is the solution. What you call “myself”, conduct that. If you know how to conduct the way you want, you will be blissed out. If you think that happiness and misery are happening by accident, or somebody else can cause happiness for you, somebody else can cause misery for you, then you are not aware enough how this life works. Don’t give that privilege to anybody! No one can make you be sad, no one can make you even to feel happy if you keep those things to yourself. Why wait and believe your happiness is caused by the external world.
Your joy and misery must be in your hands. What you want should be happening in you, not otherwise. It can only be like this if you give privilege to yourself an no one how you feel.
