In honor of International Literacy Day, we're sharing stories of the work we're doing to improve literacy throughout India. Here, in Byse, Amrita University's AMMACHI Labs addresses children’s first teachers through empowering women with a multidisciplinary, computerized approach. The tablet-based Rural Toilet Builder course gives students a self-paced, DIY-platform to become proficient in construction skills while also developing capacity in digital literacy.
Next, students in Lucknow write their names for the first time. Literacy is a source of empowerment and enhances sanitation initiatives. As the women procure materials and manage their own inventories for toilet building, they develop the confidence to succeed.
Finally, AMMACHI Labs' Social Democratic Awareness courses teach vital skills to survive in today's world. Financial literacy, numeracy, digital literacy, and using the internet to avail of government schemes are topics covered in the tablet based life skills courses and hands-on workshops in rural villages. Here, law student Seema Chaudhary informs women about the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
