When I think of "Investment," the first related themes that pop into my mind typically deal with the financial realm. I'm sure that if we were to plug a computer into the archetypal collective mind and did a search on the term, surely we would encounter images of real-estate, lofty financial institutions, and that one older gentleman who seems to be the thumbnail child of seemingly every article pertaining to an abrupt drop in the stock market (I combed some resources to find a reuse-licensed image of his trademarked expression but to no avail. I think you get the point though 😉).
Today now more than ever, self-help books, seminars, and podcasts propose that personal development can be likened to a type of investment in oneself. This concept is reinforced with practical and easy to relate to examples, such as taking a portion of one's income and purchasing an online course in order to learn a skill, which hopefully would open doors for other opportunities down the road.
In this Moment, I would like to present the idea that "Investment" also offers valuable insights when combined with the idea of "Spirituality."
In our Bank Accounts of the Self, we are given time and energy as Currency to use in this Grand Marketplace of Life. We use our will to freely explore up and down the myriads of isles of thoughts and beliefs, exchanging our currency for the items which are observed (consciously, or unconsciously) to have value.
Some may say that a stock or fund in our traditional market system is "good" or "bad," but at the end of the day it's all about whether or not a given equity presents value to the investor. The same rationale can be extended to spiritual investment. A wise spiritual investor consistently and continuously invests in belief systems and thoughts which will generate compound interest upon itself. These dividends manifest themselves in subtle but profound ways in our daily life: the way we react to situations, what we desire in any given circumstance, and even the way we perceive the world.
We all have the choice as to what kind of investment strategy we would like to manifest. Are you a Day Trader, who hops from one belief system to the next in the attempt to expertly time the rise and fall of our collective circumstance? Do you prefer to place your nest-egg in broad energy-traded funds, content on evolving at the general pace of humanity? Perhaps you resonate with the archetype of the penny-stock trader, hoping to strike it big with shallow thoughts and actions in large quantity.
We are all on a Journey of experiencing perspectives, so there is no judgement on the type of investment you choose to place within your portfolio. Do keep in mind though, that investment has risks, and going at it alone is not guaranteed to generate a return on your investment. However, that is why this process is The Common Ascent; consulting others as well as your Higher Investment Advisor significantly increases the probability of a positive return!
