World Cup Players of the round: Quarter Finals

So the world cup has kicked off and many steemians are getting in on the action with prediction score games, reviews of the games, opinions of who they think will win it and who they are supporting for the tournament and it's really livened up my feed which has been pretty slow as of late.

I've been going through tons of World cup content on the site and I didn't see much love for stand out players for each game and I thought it would be a cool series of posts to run with for the next month.

Sweden vs England

This was probably Englands easiest game at this world cup. Sweden put in a monumental effort to get this far but you could see the toll it took on the squad and the simply ran out of gas. Perhaps if they had better squad depth or used their squad rotation better, or perhaps if Zlatan was still around to give them that something extra they could have given England real problems. Much will be said of Maguire and Alli's goal but for me Jordan Pickford stood out as the man of the match, keeping a deserved clean sheet in this match, which is the only one of the quarter-finals and in a tournament with very few clean sheets. He did only need to make three saves for his clean sheet - but they were all brilliant stops.

Russia vs Croatia

So Russia's fairy tale has finally come to an end but they can really hold their head up high being ranked the lowest team in the tournament and making it this far with an ageing squad was amazing to watch. What they lacked in talent and skill they made up for with passion, commitment and organisation and made the host nation proud. But it was not to be and Croatia's golden generation soldiers on with captain and again my man of the match Luka Modric stealing the show. I'm starting to run out of superlalives for this guy as he produced yet another excellent performance, making four key passes, providing one assist while being at the heart of every decent move his side put together

So there you have it, the stand out players from the last 2 games. Looks like the consistant performers take the title in this round too as both Pickford and Modric have been stand out players in group stages as well as the knock out rounds. Can both players keep up this good form and help their teams to the finals? It's going to be interesting to see.
