Today marks a very special Monday in the realm of Olympic and combat sports.
Wrestling is the first, and most pure of sports besides throwing hands with pugilism; rarely do we hear of any superbouts regarding wrestling unless it's with an organization like WWE... which technically isn't even in the same universe as 'true' freestyle.
Four time World Champion and Gold Medalist Jordan Burroughs is the A-Side to this wrestling superbout against arguably the greatest freestyle wrestler of all time in Ben Askren! The now UFC welterweight contender has admitted that him and Jordan have utmost respect for each other, and a few years back Jordan actually got the best of Askren when they trained together for a few days.
In a very open [pre-bout] interview this morning with ESPN mma reporter Ariel Helwani, Askren admitted to kind of playing up a Twitter beef between him and Jordan to have some fun.. but at the end of the day it's all mutual respect, and Askren holds JB in the highest of regards (as does most of the sporting world).
The main event begins tonight at 8pm Eastern Time, Askren and Burroughs will be two standard 3 minute rounds. Expect the event to be filled with a lot of talent throughout the night, and although this post is a bit late, there is still a lot of time to catch the amateurs and the main event whom fill the card.
If you are a fan of Olympic sport, wrestling, combat.. or all of the above, check out this spectacle tonight and let me know what ya think!
I'm taking Jordan Burroughs in this one, but Askren should make it one hell of a match!
