In the NFL it is all about “options” for both the players and the team owners. Today the Denver Broncos decided to pass on picking up the option of keeping and paying linebacker Brandon Marshall. Marshall signed a 4 year contract extension in 2016 after the Broncos Super Bowl victory and was all set to earn 6.5m this season and 7m next.
Marshall just turned 30 which is still prime years for a middle linebacker and the fact he was a 5th round draft pick and has stayed in a Starting role this long is quite remarkable. The fact is, he just doesn’t make enough plays for us in my opinion. He has been hurt the last 2 years in his defense but, the NFL is a win now, production based league and the Broncos just didn’t feel they were getting enough bang for their buck and I agree with them. This move frees up more salary cap money to seek out a more dominate player like CJ Mosley in Baltimore which Denver badly needs.
Marshall was relatively well liked during his stay in Denver but his underachieving play will most likely make fans not forget his political views, kneeling for the American Flag and media side shows. Good luck down the road Brandon Marshall, I hope you land in a spot that helps you succeed in the NFL........but it you sign with the Chiefs.........I hope Phillip Lindsay helps you get on the bad end of an ESPN highlight reel next year. Go Broncos.
