📰 Santi Cazorla’s Arsenal woe goes on after ninth operation on injury
Santi Cazorla has been forced to cast off hopes of a come back in January after he had numerous of surgery and for a ninth time. The Gunner's midfielder, who has not featured in any game since October 2016, suffered another setback just as he was entering the final phase of his rehabilitation.
“As a result of some unpleasantness in the tendon that I had been suffering in the pass days, I have had to go into theatre for one more time,” Cazorla wrote on Twitter. “I have to put back the date for my come back. I still have the motivation and the hope of being able to come back and enjoy my great passion of football.”
Cazorla 32, who has played 77 matches for Spain, has to begin all over again in what has been a long, painful and complex process that began with a seemingly innocuous ankle knock picked up in a friendly against Chile in 2013.
Arsène Wenger narrates Santi Cazorla’s injury as the worst he had seen. A knee ligament injury was followed by surgery on an achilles tendon. An infection, initially unnoticed and not treated, damaged the bone and saw him lose eight centimetres of tendon.
Cazorla had reconstructive surgery, with skin grafted from a forearm where there was a tattoo with his daughter’s name on his ankle. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca, Cazorla unveiled that doctors told him there was a risk of losing his leg.
