Wilt Chamberlain, arguably one of the top five greatest players in NBA history, didn't always play with the Philadelphia/ San Francisco Warriors/76ers. No I'm not talking about his career with the Lakers, and I'm not even talking about his career as a Harlem Globetrotter - yes he was a globetrotter from 1958-59.
I'm talking about his stint as a San Diego Conquistador. This ABA expansion team offered $600k to Wilt "The Stilt," to be their player/coach, but because of his tenure with the Lakers at the time, they sued to block their superstar from playing. So he was relegated to simply being a coach. A more ample title for him would have been sideline attraction, since his presence drew in monster crowds.
Unfortunately for the Conquistadors, their main attraction didn't last long; they lost Chamberlain in their third season _'74-75) and with it, the large crowds. because of this they became virtually ignored, placed last in the Western Division, and missed the 1975 ABA Playoffs as a result.
The Conquistadors were sold that summer, to Frank Goldberg, who re-named the team the San Diego Sails. They later folded that November.
