It should be a holiday. It should be. The NFL usually has one bad game to open the season, the NBA and NHL have openings in the middle of the NFL season, which means no one cares until at least the Christmas day games, but the MLB is a different breed. You tease every fan with spring training for a month and a half before you even get to a game that matters. The anticipation grows and grows so much and every player and coach wants to leave Florida and Arizona so much that when Opening Day rolls around, the cities hosting games explode with energy.
Every team plays with hope and exuberance know that for at least one day they are 0-0 and still in it to win it. Every player plays with a chip on their shoulder trying to prove to everyone that they are deserving of a major league spot.
I’ve only been able to watch a few innings of a couple different games today but the passion is incredible. O’s outfielder Gentry robs a home run early in the game and their centerfielder Adam Jones hits a walk off in the 11th. Chris Sale and the BoSox were rolling through Tampa Bay 4- nil when the wheels came off and the Rays scored 6 in the 8th to win it 6-4. Didn’t see that coming.
Giancarlo Stanton hit two homers in his Yankees debut plus Astros George Springer hits a lead off homer to start the second straight season. Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese Babe Ruth could not hit or pitch in spring training gets a hit in his first major league at bat. The light hitting White Sox are smoking the Royals 14-5. They only scored more than 12 runs 2 times last year!
I love baseball.
