Now onto the News, Rumors, and Commentary…
“The Braves announced that catcher Jonathan Lucroy has been designated for assignment. The move opens up a roster spot for another veteran catcher in Stephen Vogt, who was acquired in a trade from the Diamondbacks. Lucroy signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in May, and appeared in two games for the Braves after his…”
“Ivan – They need outfield help. Dillon – The Braves need serious help in the outfield just to limp through the second-half of the season, but the most urgent need for Atlanta beyond the next ten weeks will be a power bat for the middle of their order. Demetrius – The Braves need some sort of cosmic help because it’s pretty rare to see a team as badly snakebitten as this year’s version of the Braves have been. With that being said, the outfield is in complete shambles right now and that’s where the Braves need the most help at the moment.”
“Hill allowed four hits, three walks and three runs in five innings in his final start before the break against the Blue Jays. He wasn’t sharp in his last outing where he allowed nine hits, three walks and three runs in five innings against the Pirates, but the runs came early and he was able to limit the damage. Since allowing 13 home runs over his first eight starts, Smyly has allowed three over his last seven. Through two July starts, he has allowed seven hits, four walks and four runs in 8 2/3 innings to go along with seven strikeouts.”
“So before lacing his opposite-field double down the right-field line, was Fried hoping to get a similar opportunity? “I didn’t really have time to think,” Fried said. He became the first Braves pitcher to record three hits in a game since Alex Wood did so against the Nationals on May 10, 2015. His extra-base hit came after Cash opted to intentionally walk light-hitting catcher Kevan Smith to get to the Braves starter. “Max did a great job of allowing us to do that, you know? That’s seven really strong innings.” Fried didn’t allow a baserunner past first, but he cruised right past it when he shocked the Rays with the two-out, two-run double he hit to fuel the fourth-inning eruption.”
“So why did the Braves end up keeping Smith and designating Lucroy for assignment? “I don’t know if it isn’t that they’re pretty much the same guy,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “I’m rocking 22 for J-Hey and then for my guy Kersh,” Pederson said. “It was close enough that we were looking at houses [for] Spring Training and in Atlanta.” Approximately a week after Pederson agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with the Cubs, the Braves signed Marcell Ozuna to a four-year, $65 million deal. Lucroy When the Braves announced they had acquired Stephen Vogt from the D-backs early Saturday morning, many fans on social media wondered why the team chose to keep Kevan Smith and designate Jonathan Lucroy.”

(Last updated: July 11) LHP Grant Dayton (left shoulder inflammation) Expected return: July Dayton battled some shoulder discomfort before the Braves placed him on the injured list for the second time this season. (Last updated: June 26) LHP Tucker Davidson (left forearm strain) Expected return: Not before the second half of August Davidson was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 24, after the Braves determined he would need nearly two months to recover and regain necessary strength. (Last updated: June 24) RHP Huascar Ynoa (fractured right hand) Expected return: Not before the second half of August Ynoa will need at least six weeks to recover from the hand fracture he suffered when he punched the dugout bench in Milwaukee on May 16.”
