Habana scores the winning try that should never have been.
The 2007 Super 14 is in it's final play and the Sharks are leading 19-13 against the Bulls. Whoever wins this game will be the first South African franchise to win the Super 14 trophy. The home fans are singing the Ole Ole chant around the stadium with the Mexican waves. The Hooter is seconds away and all they have to do is kick the ball out and the game is over. Surely no one can mess this one up can they?
Butch James kicked the ball down the line and it didn't go out the Bulls moved the ball up and after a few moves down the back line and they are not really going anywhere. The ball they are getting is slow and there is nothing much on. After nearly three minutes of extra play Habana receives the ball out on the wing and cuts back in against the run of play and zig zagged his way around the defense to dive over close to the poles. Game set and match just like that.
The Sharks had won the game and had thrown the game away by not doing the basics. The shocking thing is the Sharks didn't even lay a hand on Habana as he just ghosted his way right through the heart of the Sharks defence. This showed how amateurish some of the players really are as they couldn't read what was happening. Unfortunately South African rugby is more about brute force and very little brain power and thought goes into what they are doing. A New Zealand team or an Australian team would not make an error like this.

The home fans were shocked and in a deathly silence. I can remember laughing as it was so amateurish and comical what had just happened. These are professional athletes and they have been training and planning for this moment and the months of hard work have been thrown away in seconds. In sport you are told to play to the whistle and the hooter would have sounded as the ball went out. Instead the hooter sounded and the Bulls had the ball still and anything was still possible.
The man at fault was Butch James who should just have kicked the ball out and he would be celebrating with his team mates and receiving a nice bonus as well. Instead they had egg on their face and would never live this one down. The Sharks have been in 4 finals but have never won any and who knows when this chance may happen again if it ever does.
