Sports is entertainment
Panem et Circenses, that is Latin for Bread and Games. It means that the Romans organized "games" for the lowest class to keep them content. Together with providing food. A clear example is the Colloseum in Rome, where gladiators fought with lion, bears, and eachother while being cheered on by the people.

Sports evolved out of that, luckily, mostly in a more civilized way. Nowadays sports is about showing who is the best in a certain discipline or which team competes best in a league of a certain sport. So, you can say sports is entertainment as people pay to go and watch them. And sponsor sometimes pay big money to sportsmen and women to give their product exposure. But when it comes down to it, a football game is about winning and not about who plays the most beautiful game, or scores the nicest goal. It is not about how a pole vaulter gets over the bar, it's about how high he gets over the bar.
Pure entertainment for competition
The last few decades some sports have gotten some kind of spin off action where the entertainment factor is more important than the winning part. The greatest example is this Dunk Contest that aired on TNT in 2016 and 2017. The basketball needs to go into the basket. In a basketball game it isn't one bit important how, as long as it gets in. Now in this competition, the ball usually gets in the basket, but it is way more important how. The more spectacular, the more points the contestant got. All a bit subjective, but very entertaining. It is something that is a sign of the times, and there is nothing wrong with it. Like motorcycles jumping over hills doing all kinds tricks, very entertaining, and there is a sports factor in it. But it remains subjective.
Subjective or not, I loved this series, The Dunk King, and this guy was just fenomenal. With the conveniant name: "Jordan" Kilganon. Here is a clip of his insane dunks.
