As a Nigerian child, I grew up fed with the stories of how India defeated Nigeria 100 to Nil in a football match. So many versions of this story abound. Some versions said the ball becomes a lion each time a Nigerian player wants to kick it hence they get frightened and leave the ball.
Another version said the ball multiplies and the keeper thinking he has caught the ball would leave the post, only to find the ball in the net.
Such tales were super interesting to me as a kid.
Today, Google joins Nigerians, home and abroad to celebrate a legend, Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who died on the pitch (as GOT fans will say, on his watch) during a match between Nigeria and Angola at the Surulere stadium at the 77th minute on 12th August, 1989.
Before his death at age, Okwaraji was a lawyer with a masters degree in International law. During his lifetime, he played for AS Roma, Dinamo Zagreb,
Austria Klagenfurt, VfB Stuttgart, and SSV Ulm (on loan).
Today would have been his birthday if he was alive. Happy posthumous birthday Samuel Okwaraji
