In old building stairs are often very narrow and steep and often have this spiral like shape. I know it is probably easier to build but transportating bigger things up and down is an absolute nightmare. Furniture and other clumsy things are nearly impossible to get up. If you look from above these stairs often resemble a snail shell.
But I find the geometry and the appearance on a photo interesting. How the light and shadows work inside of an old staircase.
