This is the actual location.
Tedau, Tioman Island in Malaysia
If you are a diving enthusiast this is the location for you. It is located at the fringes of the Tioman reefs. It houses the turtles, angel fish and butterfly fish.
In this trip of virtual plein air, I take you for a new experience. This time it is an underwater one. We will record the scenery in the bottom of the ocean and this time it will be in the depths of Tedau, Tioman Island.
We start with the normal sketch and this time we can play with the composition from the picture reference by adding the iconic turtle as the main subject in the painting.
We start by making random sketches to get the strokes of sea water on the brush.
Only after being satisfied with the brush in the water, I will separate each layer of the object such as the fish, turtle and the coral reefs to another layer.
I will start with some random colour on the coral reefs by looking for basic colour for each reef. The choices of colour has to be within the medium range.
You can start with medium detailing on each of the reef. The painting does not have to be detailed in this area because the focus will be on the turtle which is our subject matter.
The focus is on the structure of the fishes. I will take only the important form for the structure of the fish.
Now we shift to the turtle. In this process I will show you step by step in detail. We start with the medium basic colour range and I will include shadow and lighting.
I will include the detailed highlight on each of the coral reefs by using highlight colour that is more towards blue. To make the entire ambience more lively, I will add some bubles from the fishes by using the brush with the colour that is whitish blue.
This picture took me 3 hours to complete. This is an interesting experience because this is the first time I create a virtual painting from the bottom of the ocean. Till we meet again.
