Treatment of tuberculous spondylitis involves combination therapy with several antituberculous drugs. It is usually recommended 6-9 months of cure.
Surgery is relevant if inflamed tissue presses against the spinal cord. Surgery can also be performed if the spine becomes unstable, or in the event of a major bias in the back, or if it is needed to drain a boil.
First line TB drugs
The first line TB drugs are:
- Isoniazid (H/Inh)
- Rifampicin (R/Rif) (In the United States rifampicin is called rifampin)
- Pyrazinamide (Z/Pza)
- Ethambutol (E/Emb)
These are the antitubercular drugs that generally have the greatest activity against TB bacteria. This medicine for TB is particularly used for someone with active TB disease who has not had TB drug treatment before. All the other TB drugs are generally referred to as second line TB drugs.
