Steem (upper case) is generally used to refer to the platform and steem to refer to the currency itself. The name was inspired by the word ‘esteem’ coupled with the fact that steem is a homophone for steam, which has associations with power. Traders can speculatively trade steem on various cryptocurrency exchanges while content creators can aim to make a living or at least to subsidise the content they create by using the Steem platform.
