Often, people bring up the fairness of Steem, whether it be on the rewards on various types of content or how whales control the pool with their stakes or that some people are better at networking than others. I have heard it isn't fair because of language, economic, skill, experience and a whole range of other factors that are cited as evidence of unfairness.
I came across this quote today thanks to
“You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.”
― J. Michael Straczynski
It is a quote from Babylon 5.
Imagine if Steem was fair.
Let's say there is a hypothetical Steem God that is able to judge all pertinent factors across time and space and then distribute the pool based upon things such as; quality of work, value to the blockchain, background experience, effort applied, usefulness, future community value, investment worth and the like - Would your rewards go up, or down?
Remembering that this is of course impossible but, it is something to consider when claiming unfairness of Steem. For example, many people complain about how the whales act, ,don't share enough or are lazy but, most have no idea what these people do or ore importantly, have done to have their stake.
Most people on Steem conveniently attribute only what happens on Steem to an account. It is unfair that a whale with 1 Million Steem is getting about 100 Steem a day of interest but no one asks, how did that account get a million Steem to begin with? Trust me, they aren't all mined in the early days of the platform and even those that were, had skills that most people still don't possess today.
It is also unfair because some people can buy without having to go hungry, unfair because some people have talents to write, unfair that some have the personality and experience in life that makes their content more demanded than others. The list of unfair is long.
In my opinion, one of the worst things a person with talent can do is limit themselves because others are jealous of what they have and claim, it is unfair. Be your damn best, no matter if your best is brilliance or, bullshit in comparison to brilliance.
It would be interesting to see the pool distributed fairly for a month or two and work out WHO the Steem God would consider valuable. It would be interesting to see how many gainers there would be and, how many losers if you imagine that instead of proof of stake, there was a precise proof of value mechanism to reward producers.
Do you think those buying votes on their work will have Steem God reward them similarly, would the shitposters get more or less, what about the autovoters and bots, would those with high stake get rewarded as now or would there be adjustments made depending on how they have used that stake in the past or, what they were like in real-life? What would the God do with those who are suffering economically and selling, would they be rewarded more or less based on the value to the chain they bring?
Do you want fair?
Do you want Steem to be fair, do you want it to reward based on effort put in to the blockchain and how much value your account brings? Do you think you would be better off or "all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?"
Would you be happy living with Steem Karma.
There is a mass of activity that happens on Steem that very few people know much about, let alone know if it is bringing value to the chain or not. So many initiatives have started off strong and fallen to the wayside, forgotten by the very people who claimed they were doing it because, it was so important. What would happen if all the promises and claims made were factored into the God's calculations, would you be better off?
What would happen if every post, every comment and every vote you made, the Steem God could know the intention behind it, ,know your mind and heart and be able to judge its value to the community, to Steem and reward it at the exact percentage it deserves - Are you earning more or less than now?
If these calculations are valued across the system every 7 days, how much pull on the pool do your actions have when connected absolutely to the value they bring to the chain. Are you getting the equivalent of whale votes or, are you getting flagged by the Steem God?
As I have said many times before, I am not a fan of fair in the human sense as people limit it to, fair for themselves without regard for others which, is not fairness at all. In my view of the world, we are all living in what is fair by universal definition as; We each have the ability to be our best each day, regardless of resources or circumstance.
Maybe you have peaked.
Maybe I haven't.

Maybe I am lucky after all, as who knows how bad my life might have been otherwise.
