Most people on Steem blockchain at some point talked or thought about quitting this platform and joining some other platform. This normally happens when they get angry or disappointed, or their experience here is not in alignment with their expectations. Recent problems with HF-20 implementation intensified such sentiments among several people in this community.
Often such reactions are temporary and subsides after some time. Some do quit but fail to find a better or a comparable alternative to such a robust and established platform like Steem. Steem has achieved some sort of monopoly in its domain as no one got close enough to compete it. So Steem takes some liberty from this fact as it's in that position 😊.
Facebook Alternatives
Over time, I too have joined several platforms to check what others are offering but haven't found anything better than Steem. Recently many Steemians joined the newly launched Steem's clone Weku. But most of them are riding on two boats as they don't want to abandon the Steem but they also don't want to miss out on Weku. I see several oldies and established Steemians active there. But I didn't find it worthy enough to join it. Perhaps the lure of getting some free coins is what makes people join new communities and since Weku is exact clone of Steem, Steemians find it easy to stick there.
But I think that Steem isn't established enough in the market yet to encourage the growth of Steem alternatives. First, people will take action against established social networks like Youtube, Facebook etc. For some months, #DeleteFacebook campaign is on the rise and several celebrities have deleted their Facebook accounts to lend their support to this movement esp. after the Cambridge Analytica data breach. Several Facebook alternatives has mushroomed up including Mastodon, Minds, ong.social, MeWe, Path etc.
Of these, Minds has the highest Alexa rank of 8564 after the Steemit's 2286 (Global Ranks). Notably, of late, Minds' Alexa rank is climbing up whereas Steemit is falling down.
Launch of open beta of Sociall
Last week, after about a year's work, Sociall's close beta gave way to it open beta launch. And within days, it got over 5000 users. I too created an account there to test the waters but didn't do anything else 😉
Like Minds, Sociall is also based on Ethereum blockchain with SCL as its native currency. Although Sociall has a lot of work to do to integrate several features for making it an active community, it has attracted a lot of attention. It's Facebook migration tool will be ready by the next week and you can easily copy your Facebook profile data to your Sociall profile.
Sociall is focusing more on User data security and aims a self-governance model. It will also have a decentralized marketplace and will also allow advertising on its platform.
Unlike Steem, it doesn't reward content creators. According to its CEO, rewarding content creation ultimately degrade the quality of content and quality is not sustainable. In fact, they are going to reward SCL tokens for maintaining quality. Users who will contribute in checking and reporting spam and abuse posts will be rewarded SCL.
It will be interesting to see how this platform evolves and how it grow quality content without rewarding content creators. They have big plans for promotions and advertising to popularize the platform once its ready for it.
This should be a good platform for those Steemians who often say that they are not here for the money but for quality content. IMHO too, if only content quality is the concern then Sociall should be a good option for them.
- How about you? Would you love to join platforms like Sociall
- As a content creator, would you prefer a reward-less platform like Sociall over Steem?
