In our everyday lives, in almost all of our endeavors, we are sometimes faced with options that will require us to make a choice. Sometimes the choices we are left with is easy to choose and likely to be against the will of God, while the other is harder and true way. This whole thing I just pointed out is temptation, but my focus here is the one that has to with the lust of the flesh. To overcome this lust of the flesh, one needs Self control. This is a problem to believers today.
What is self control?
Self control is the ability to withstand the lust of the flesh or say no to what the body wrongly desires because it is only beneficial to the flesh. It is true that every of our actions has a consequence or reward, depending on if it is good or bad. With self control, you can prevent the consequences of sinning against God with the body. The body like it or not is in constant enmity with the spirit because what the body desire is always in opposition to what the spirit desires. The desires of the body constantly seeks laziness, gluttony, lust for immorality, while the spirit is always against these things because it seeks righteousness. Self control is what we need to conquer these unhelpful desires.
Why do you we need self control?
We need self control in our lives that constantly seeks righteousness. Self control can help us each day to avoid some kind of things that can easily make us sin against God. The Bible advises that we should have it for it is a strong tool against unholiness.
"Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city".
Proverbs 16:32 NIV
"Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control".
Proverbs 25:28 NIV
How do we get self control?
Self control is a matter of choice. It is already in every man. But it can be strengthened by knowing the word of God. When the word of God is always in our heart, the normally hard choice becomes easier because you now know the implications of the opposite action.
We can also ask God for him to gives us more strength to be able to control ourselves.
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline".
2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
"I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you".
Psalm 119:11 NIV
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 NIV
We need to make use of self control, for it makes our pursuit of holiness shorter and easier. People with self discipline rule the world.
