Role Model #16
I have had lots of opportunities attending and doing programs and seminars with of Ghanaian youth. One thing l always realise is most of people approaching some speakers and requesting to make them their role models.. Most of the times, I had asked them; why this or that person? These are some of the answers I had received;
"He/she is so cute"
" I want to speak like him/her"
"I want to marry a Lecturer/Doctor"
"I want to dress like they way he /she does" etc
I had laughed in my head but had gone on to ask if that's all they wanted in a role model. Some had been speechless, Interesting to you, isn't it?
I had then taken time to explain to many people what has really made their total personality;
how they had responded to life issues at some point in time, learning each day what life throws at them.
Their determination, their strength and weaknesses, their unyielding faith, standards set for my self and how gradually they have reached those standards. After these conversations, I had asked again if they would still want those people they know as their role model because wanting to be like them is not about what they had told me.
Unfortunately, that's how most of us behave. We are strongly pushed towards people for the physical things we see and wish to be like them but most of the times, we don't even know their stories. If you so much admire someone and pick the person as a role model, please find out from that person ( or any other avenue that is available) what his or her story is, ask hard and real life experience questions so as to be well informed about your role model. This might go a long way to help you in life because not everyone is a good role model material. Convince yourself that your role model is worth emulating and then you are good to go.
If it had to be what you see physically, then don't bother because people can really put up an act in public just to draw others after them!
My take;
there is nothing wrong in picking someone as your role model but be well informed about what makes up that person. Who knows; maybe after knowing, you wouldn't even want the person as your role model again!
I am and whatever I have shared is so true!
