Rev 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Rev 1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
Rev 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
Rev 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
Rev 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
This is John the beloved! The same John who laid his head on the chest of Jesus as the reclined during the Last Supper. John always referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved”. Here John is banished to the Islands of Patmos and he has a vision of the glorified, all powerful King of kings and Lord of lords. Such a terrifying sight. As we we read in vs 17 of our text, John’s response is to pass out from fear. Jesus touches him and says, “Fear not.”.

40 to 70 years after the ascension of Christ
In this text we can see clearly John is speaking with Jesus and this vision He sees Jesus. I am writing this as a precursor to my belief that Jesus is still appearing to people even today. So many say this goes against bible theology, but I cannot see why. When we interpret the Bible, one of the keys is to see also what is recorded in the Bible or what the early church practiced.
When looking for a date to determine when John’s revelation took place, it was difficult to come up with an exact date. Patmos was a place criminals we banished and many think it was a penal colony where the inmates were forced into labor. Most agree this happened in the latter part of John’s life. But what we have is Jesus appearing to John an estimated 40 to 70 years after the resurrection and ascension.
