Eating fruits in Venezuela has become a luxury, due to its high cost. According to the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO), Venezuela was the country on the continent that experienced the largest increase in malnutrition in South America, between 2014 and 2017.
FAO adds in its report that one in three people suffers from malnutrition, and the most vulnerable population is children under five years of age.
Some fruit sellers have told us that producers warn that the shortage of fertilizers and pesticides has increased the price of fruits and that it is almost impossible to add them to the daily menu.
In this aspect we have focused on establishing sustainable agriculture and the creation of urban gardens to supply the dining rooms. In our message of a land for bread from heaven, we talked about the sowing that would take place. Based on the importance of fruits and the contribution they have for children, following the nutritional guidelines according to their age, we have decided to use a large part of the land for the sowing of: Melon, Sandia, Lechoza, Orange, Cambur, and this sowing was carried out, in the next days, we will show the advances in this sense.
The most moisturizing fruits for children.
Watermelon is the queen of hydration, followed very closely by the melon: it is composed of 91% water. Watermelon is also rich in potassium. The melon, in turn, is an immense source of properties: fiber, potassium, calcium, folic acid, zinc and vitamins A and E. To make matters worse, its sweet flavor make it one of the favorite "goodies" of the children.
Input
Of all the fruits, perhaps the favorite of the children is the banana. It is a very nutritious food, fundamental for the growth of children, because it provides large doses of energy, potassium, folic acid, fiber and vitamin B6 (essential for proper absorption of proteins, carbohydrates and fats).
In our dining room this week, we approach the children with the theme of fruits, we talk a little about the gardens, and what each one can contribute from their homes.
We make a fruit salad for children (cambur, melon, watermelon, papaya)
Our website is working on a nutritional guide, and food modules, likewise an online health module, with medical professionals who advise and guide parents to attend to any unforeseen event in a timely manner.
