Nowadays every home will have at least one access point. The common issue with single access point is single point of failure. Means, if the access point failed, wifi connection are also disrupted.
Mesh networking is the latest trend in home networking. On 2018 earlier this year, Linksys has announced their first mesh networking system; called Velop.
In a nutshell, mesh networking systems allows home users to create their own wireless distributed system. The main purpose is to increase and spread Wi-Fi coverage.
How does it differ from range extenders or wireless extender?
- range extenders work by AMPLIFY an existing Wi-Fi signal.
- Mesh networking systems, do not rely on amplification. Mesh networks consist of nodes which EXPAND Wi-Fi coverage by transmitting data around at Wi-Fi speeds.
Linksys Velop have four main features:
- Self-Heals
- Self-Select
- Self-Organize
- One Main Network
Pro:
- easy to setup
- support wireless & wired
- Good wireless coverage for bigger house
Con:
- Require at least two or three node to become a mesh
