Hunter's comment
Is it a magic flying carpet? Not quite but it's a step in the right direction.
The ArcaBoard is an electric hoverboard built by ARCA Space Corporation for commercial purposes. The first deliveries started in May 2016 as was presented to the press and public at Top Marques in Monaco in front of Prince Albert II of Monaco in April 2016.
Technology
The 145 cm long and 76 cm wide hoverboard is equipped with 36 high power electric ducted fans that spin at 45,000 rotations per minute and generate up to 272 hp. It can lift and hover a person 30 cm above ground with a max speed of 20 km/h.
There are 2 versions of ArcaBoard available:
- Enhanced Thrust Version: can lift a person up to 110 kg for a max time of 3 minutes
- Long Endurance Version: can lift a person up to 90 kg for a max time of 6 minutes
Using the optional ArcaDock charging station the hoverboard can be charged to full power in 35 minutes.
2 hovering options
You can control the ArcaBoard via Bluetooth using your iOS or Android smartphone.
You can hover:
- with the stabilization system: inertial stabilization system keeps it flying level
- without the stabilization system: you have to balance the hoverboard yourself
Multiple reduntant system
Each of the 36 electric engines is powered by its own set of batteries independently of one another so ArcaBoard will continue operating even in case of several engine failures.
Pros and cons
The best thing about Arcaboard is that you can actually experience hovering above ground and sort of fulfiling that fantasy scene from the movie Back to the future.
The cons are definitely the high price and only a short amount of time (up to 6 min) can be spent hovering. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to experience hovering faster than 20 km/h.
And the design could be a lot sleeker. It's now basically a big rectangle box.
I'm sure they wil improve the product in time.
