Gitter is a chat and networking platform that helps to manage, grow and connect communities through messaging, content and discovery.
i think this is especially more focused on developers wanting to find other developers but you could use it for other styles of communities too, i mean it's not solely for that even if they show a lot of communties that exist around tools and frameworks -- the fact that it's free is pretty stellar and it seems to have a wonderful design too -- who knew you could have both things!
