It's official! If you are 21, you can purchase the legal limit of cannabis and spark up at this weekend's High Times Cannabis Cup, May 4 & 5 at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds, as the Sacramento City Council votes to approve a "pilot" program.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) CBS 13 — By Drew Bollea
"A first of its kind event is headed to Cal Expo this weekend. The Sacramento City Council voted 6-2 Tuesday night to allow the High Times Cannabis Cup event to move forward. The event will include the sale and the legal public consumption of marijuana.
“I think this is a big deal,” High Times consultant Jason Kinney said. “ It's a culmination of a long process for the state of California, which overwhelmingly supported Prop. 64, as well as the city of Sacramento.”
“I don’t want to cause a loss of revenue to Cal Expo or High Times, but I don’t think we’re ready for this type of event in Sacramento,” council member Jeff Harris said.
The event is Friday and Saturday at Cal Expo, which is in Harris’ district. He said he learned about it 12 days ago. That was just one of the reasons he opposed it.
“Quite frankly, the promoter did not come to the city early enough for us to have this conversation in our normal way,” Harris said.
High Times CEO Adam Levin told the council they’d only been planning the event four months. Kinney explained there was some red tape with the new state regulations that they had to cut through. Once they knew of the required city approval, they sought to get it.
“There was no lack of desire to want to be compliant,” Kinney said.
Council members discussed the regulation of the public use of marijuana during the meeting. There were also safety concerns, especially when the thousands of event goers leave.
“That’s my real hang-up here,” Harris said. “We don’t have the tools to understand the ramifications of this.”
Organizers agreed to changes like having a wrist band to indicate when a patron has bought the maximum amount of marijuana and having bags checked on the way out.
There was also some concern about a girls volleyball tournament scheduled to happen at the same time as the Cannabis Cup event.
The Cal Expo CEO told the council that the tournament promoter didn’t have a problem with the Cannabis Cub. The events will be separate with different entrances and designated parking places."
