If you can accept that Steemit is a community, not an office space or magical unicorn, then you will better plan for success. www.steemit.chat and thechannel on Discord are two great places to start meeting people and finding your crowd. They do both require signing up for each site/app. They are not part of steemit.com. Discord, a gamer's chat app, actually has a huge number of Steemit communities in their own respective chat rooms; so it is worth checking out!
(One last thing: You can find communities within Steemit.com itself, it is just not near as fast or easy to be a part of these communities on a personal level because there is not a native chat feature.)
