As a platform, Steemit is more than just a social media site: it's an investment opportunity. Monetizing content is a revolutionary approach, and has the potential to change the game for good. This makes Steemians more than just bloggers or social media users - it makes us investors, and we need to ensure that we diversify our investments in order to be successful.
Unique Opportunities
Steemit is unique because, as an investment opportunity, it's entirely possible to bootstrap yourself to success. Yes, a new user can take some of their existing capital and invest it in the platform by buying Steem and powering up, but you can also earn your way to greatness through producing valued content that gets rewarded by the community. This means content is the stock in trade of Steemit; this also means that in order or Steemit to be successful, as an investment platform and as a social media platform, content needs to be diverse enough to be stable and viable.
What does this mean in a social media context? Diversification in this instance takes two forms: authorship and curation. Content authors need to write on a diverse array of topics. Right now, the #steemit tag is the most popular and most populated by a longshot; there's lots of content about the platform itself. Talking about Steemit is always going to be a popular topic, but we also need to ensure that, as authors, we don't limit our posting to that topic exclusively. And yes, I understand the irony of making that statement and then tagging this post in the same category I say needs diversification, but it's the best way to reach the widest audience right now.
Diversify Your Diversification
But content diversification is just one piece of the puzzle. It won't matter how much diverse content we have here on Steemit without curators rewarding content in a more diverse way - spread over a wide variety of topics and tags instead of just a few centralized ones. It's up to all of us to make this happen, as decentralization is one of the primary goals of this platform.
Having all our eggs in one basket is a recipe for disaster. Taking steps to spreading our investments out, diversifying, and decentralizing by producing and curating a wide variety of content will ensure the long-term success of Steemit, transforming it into not just a high-yield investment opportunity but also a vibrant social media platform. It's up to us to make that happen, so let's do it. Upvote content you usually pass over. Write a post that's wildly different than your usual content. Diversify, decentralize, and let's make Steemit the kind of place that becomes legend!
