Any platform needs to have a positive user flow. New users must come in to replenish those who have left.
Even though it is decentralized and it embraces the blockchain to make it so, Steemit is not exempt from this.
As you said, it is possible that Steemit will never be accepted by the masses — that it is destined to remain a niche site. While others may disagree and claim that Steem is the way of the future, the point is that in either model, a positive user flow is necessary.
This means that USER EXPERIENCE becomes of paramount importance. To be honest, as you pointed out, just establishing an account can be a hassle for many. The learning curve regarding best practices on the site is steeper than what most people are used to experiencing.
If the Steem blockchain is able to develop a steady core audience consisting of consumers of content as well as creators, if the number of Dapps powered by Steem draws in innovators, expanding the scope and reach of Steem — then, I feel, the future is bright.
If not, it will become a platform constantly shifting in the driving forces that affect its destiny. One day pushed by speculators, another by those seeking to game the system for quick profit, and eventually into oblivion.
Maybe it's my optimistic nature, but I feel that the former will prevail.
