Google Ranking
Have you ever checked on Google Search if some of your blogs are on the front page for certain keywords? I've been doing that for a while and I've noticed that some of my articles actually rank pretty high. It's definitely a good idea to spend a little time optimizing your articles, so they have a better chance of ranking higher in search engines. Not only are you promoting your own blog, you're promoting Steemit as well!
Just try to find some of your own articles on Google Search by looking for keywords that you've used. Are any of your articles displayed on the first or second page for certain keywords?
Improve Your Position
After I've written an article, I'll check which are the most used keywords throughout my written text and possibly change some of them. I'll cross-check them on [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/?geo=US) to see how popular they are.
If you create original content, while also being mindful of the keywords you use, there's no reason why you can't rank high in Google Search. You might even gain more fans and followers, because people found your blog through Google. I've had people directly say to me that they had read a tutorial of mine, after they found it through Google.
Here you see that I'm in 5th place for the keywords "bitcoin time-lock howto" & "bitcoin time-lock guide". This is the article that someone mentioned they'd found through Google. Similarly, me position for basic income related keywords are also pretty good.
I'm not really an SEO specialist, but I think that backlinks still have quite a lot of influence on your ranking. So, whenever I can add a link to one of my articles on other websites, I definitely do that. Since I'm also posting on Bitcointalk, I'll sometimes link my own articles as sources for my replies on the forum. Only when it's relevant to the conversation though, it's not a good idea to spam...
Extended Monetization
Since we only get paid for the first 7 days after we've published a new post, it's a good idea to also add some affiliate-based advertising to your articles. That way, you can also earn from readers who aren't members of Steemit, who might have found one of your posts through search engines.
I personally only add services that I use myself, thus I'm also endorsing them. It's best to also mention that you've added referral links in your article. I personally see no ethical problem here for using affiliate/referral links, as long as you're upfront about it and do not promote dubious services.
Lack of Stats
One thing that's holding us back of doing a somewhat proper analysis of our traffic, if the fact that Steemit doesn't offer us any sort of statistics. On Medium for example, it's possible to see how many people have read your article and where your traffic comes from.
We used to have that simple view counter under our articles, but even that is gone now. I really hope Steemit can add at least some statistics to our blogs.
Conclusion
I hope that I've been able to convince you that it's beneficial for you, to keep track of your blog's search results. You will bring more new people to Steemit and are able to extend your post's earnings through advertising.
Steemit will only succeed when it's on top of the search results. So, kudos to all the talented creators who are putting out great content that reaches the top of Google Search.
