Hey everyone! Just thought I'd make a quick post to point out something I learned as a Minnow. Something that I think other Minnows might wanna pay attention to when posting. I made a real newbie mistake on my last post called: "Have you ever been so cold it actually hurt to breathe?" What was it? Not paying attention to my tags. Did you realize that the first tag you use for your post is the actual category your post will reside? Also, you won't be able to change the first tag you use once you have published.
Now, I was looking at tags like keywords, you get the right 5 that match your content and it makes it easier to find. This is somewhat true, but they are also categories, with the main one being the first tag. (If I'm wrong, please let me know. I'm just going by my own experience with the tags.) Soooo,. that being said, the first tag you use in your post should match your content as closely as possible.
You see, I put my photography post under art.... of course I had photography in tags too, along with 3 others. But, getting people to find your photos under art is sort of like heading to the underwear department of a store to find socks.... sure, they are there most of the time, but if there is a full section called socks in the store, you'd probably just go there and skip the underwear section.
I sort of figured that out, shook my head, and went in to edit my post. I would change "art" to "photography" within tags and fix my mistake. Well, once posted, you cannot change the first tag. At least that was what the error said when I tried. Oh, well, lesson learned. But, I will be more careful choosing my tags from now on. Besides, we have a saying where I live... "stupid should hurt." After all, how else are you suppose to learn anything?
So keep those tags tight, to the point, and watch that first one, it's a doozy.
