Two days ago i decided to go on the STEEM SPEAK on the discordapp , and i must say its was an interesting experience, i spoke with the coolest guys on the platform.
@fyrstikken @condra @illestbambi among others,
The usual banter came in almost immediately i told them i was Nigerian.
"are you a wealthy Nigerian prince"
"western Union"
"Credit Card Number"
This is the typical single story of Nigerians online.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a fabulous TED talk called “The Danger of a Single Story.” back in 2009.
It was about what happens when complex human beings and situations are reduced to a single narrative:
when Africans, for example, are treated solely as pitiable poor, starving victims with flies on their faces.
Or the Mexicans widely seen as abject immigrants to The U.S
"The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story. . . . " Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Of course there have been lots of scams and fraud from people claiming to be kings and princes from Nigeria.
You see, just like any other country, you find good people and bad people, but to have a definitive opinion about a particular people generally based on the mass media or based on some encounter will never give us the entire truth. There are lots of Nigerians on the internet for the fun, and everything that comes with it. (shout-out to @ogoowinner and @ogochukwu for making us proud on steemit).
I was very excited when @fyrstikken asked me about Nigerian musicians like Wizkid and Davido and Iceprince, @illestbambi also asked about Fela Kuti. was hard on me with some soci-political issues but in the the end it was all fun.
"Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity. . . ." Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Most of the discussions was in form of pure Banter and openness to learn.This kinda gave me a sense of Home.
Be sure to catch me every now and then on the discordapp........
If you were not online when the fun happened on the discordapp , you can always listen to the Podcast produced by @condra on Youtube.
