From earliest boyhood the navy had a strong fascination or from the Naval Academy on January 1,1869 . I was born in Nashville , Tennessee on January 1, 1858 , and can just remember certain excitement in connection with the early part of the Civil War .
My vague recollections of that time are the review of the Rock City Guards by Geral Beauregard in 1862 , which I witnessed from our nursery window , and the "panic of Nashville " when the Union
gunboats came up the Cumberland River to assist the army .
