Today we all got the news about Dlive leaving the Steem blockchain. There have been many posts written about this topic, discussing the reasons behind the decision. On that topic im going to say that i think they made fools of everyone. They packed their bags, the money they made and left. Their conduct is the pinnacle of dishonesty, lack of transparency and complete lack of care about their platform users. Something im sure will bite them in the ass eventually.
But thats nor here nor there.
What i wanted to talk about, inspired by DLIVE attempt to promote the blockchain they are migrating to through FUD and STEEM bashing, (they could have just said bye) is the danger of opportunism in the crypto community.
Dlive is a prime example of this behavior.
The biggest problem i see crypto currencies facing is the stigma of everything being a scam, users being unscrupulous individuals trying to cheat you and take advantage of you in every way possible because the blockchain provides them secrecy and freedom from responsibility.
The founder of Dlive, is one of those people. He created a parasitic application that feeds off the blockchain, never really utilizing much of its advantages. DLIVE is one of those projects that in no significant way is different from already established video streaming sites like Twitch, except for the fact that they put "blockchain" in their marketing pitch.
Someone else is going to create a dapp like Dlive and replace them as fast as you can snap your fingers. Really, their importance lied mostly in delegation that they took advantage of.
And this is what we need to watch for. Steem has a very special place in the crypto sphere. While the "archaic" blockchains like BTC, BCH etc... offer just a way to move money from A to B, Steem managed to create a strong community and an ecosystem where the blockchain is utilized every day in various ways.
I know that STEEM price is bleeding lately and that FUD and market stupidity is keeping STEEM from having a $1-5 billion market cap but we are in a very special position.
Steem is one of the rare crypto with an actual use case that is in function right now. We have a pretty large community, by crypto standards, that use STEEM every day and create lasting bonds that is core for a successful future.
While the Dlive team is the opportunistic kind that cares little about the community, the very individuals that use their service, we need to learn from their failure to recognize the importance of what is core behind the idea of Blockchain.
And that is: empowering the individual.
P2P was just the first step. We are way past that. Whats important at this point is to understand the place STEEM has in the grand scheme of things and the bright future thats in front of us.
DLIVE was just another passing thing, a parasitic occurrence that is gone now..
All i can say is good riddance.
