You might also add, go look for communities on discord or steemit.chat. Finding real people that post quality content is a good way to get advice and find quality people to follow (or so advises the commenter that's been so busy lately they haven't been in either steemit.chat or on discord...)
Resteem and upvote content that you like
But don't resteem everything you like. I've unfollowed people because of the mess of unrelated resteems so deep I couldn't find their posts in my feed. I've heard confessions from others that have done the same. Maybe we're a minority, but you might want to make sure you get your own content up in addition to the resteems.
Don’t spam
In addition to this, do comment on other's people's stuff after posting, quite often I go check out the commenters blog after I see their votes or meaningful comments looking to for stuff to vote on.
