There always has been harsh critics of Steem/Steemit. Imho Steemit works - its a long time investment and also a lot of fun (because of the great community!). But one thing is sure: It will not stay as unique as it is today. Competition will grow. An alternative which I just discovered is "Reddcoin":
Reddcoin is aiming at integrating a digital currency platform with all major social networks to make the process of sending and receiving money "fun and rewarding for everyone". I think this is quite a good idea and could be very succesfull because it is building on already existing social platforms.
