Is to mostly talk about steemit!
Or OMG have I really just made a video reflecting on the reflexive nature of steemit?
NB the video is related to this post on DLive - I just got impatient and posted this seperatley while it was uploading. In retrospect I should have maybe just added this text tot the Steemit post linked to the video! Still learning this platform!
I have a wide range of interests and thus follow a wide range of people here on steemit who post on everything from homesteading and alternative lifestyles, anarchism, philosophy, financial freedom and early retirement, and education, but probably the number one topic which binds all of my followers together is…. Steemit itself!
Amidst posts on their varied and eclectic interests, many of the people I engage with regularly also post and comment frequently on issues surrounding the technological economic, social and ethical development of the platform; and it’s clear that I’m not the only one here who has invested a significant amount of intellectual energy trying to figure out what’s going on here, and given some thought about how to improve things. Hell, I’m not even really qualified!
And it isn’t just me and my mutual followers who share this interest in the platform either… according to 
I think it’s fair to say that steemit is ‘radically reflexive platform’... what I mean by this is not only are people engaging with each other around their particular interests (homesteading, art, music, travel, or whatever), a significant proportion of these people are engaging with each other about the nature of the platform through which they express themselves, such as:
- Reward pool rape and how to stop it/ limit it.
- LInear reward curves vs other N2/ nWhtever curves
- BOTs VS human curation
And so on…
Now, I know that these debates cause a certain level of friction, and I know we are far from resolving many of these issues to the satisfactory outcome of all parties (if that’s ever going to happen)... but the point of this vlog is just to pause (ironcially pause, because a vlog is a moving form, unless you pause it of course) for a moment and reflect on the fact that at least people are reflecting on the platform, and in the very short history of social media….to have this many people reflecting on what social media should be, on how it should relate to offline worlds, on issues of how to translate subjective values into objective value, and on issues of fairness viz rewards, is actually quite new.
I mean…. how many people on Facebook and YouTube are seriously using those platforms to critique the architecture of those platforms: the use there is really limited to just engagement around interests.
So as a final thought, we might all disagree on many of the ‘issues’ here on steemit, but let’s not forget that the fact that there is so much passionate disagreement is actually a sign of its hugely disruptive potential.
