This drink was actually created in the 1880's and was known as "southern whisky sour" or "continental sour".
Since the late 20th Century this cocktail got the name "New York sour".
The regular "NYS" is a classy whisky sour which you float with a dry red wine (Bordeaux for example).
There is also a variant with egg white which gives the drink a creamy texture.
I personally prefer to drink it the classy way.
