There have been a bunch with issues regarding security for phishing, scams, and such on Steemit. Accounts like @Guard and @SteemCleaners are out there helping make Steemit a safer place, but we have to take some responsibility as well. So there are some ways to combat fairly easy which I will list below using extensions on your browser. SteemPlus also has an entire UI overhaul that I will cover as well.
Steemed Phish 🚩

Simply put it will check links that you view as well as browse Steemit in comments and such.
This is what happens the extension will do when you would click on a spam/scam/phishing link to prevent you from having any issues.
You might get a pop-up like this instead or as well, but none the less, it will notify you and ideally keep you safe and secure without worry.

This extension is for hiding low repuation comments from your feed of comments so you don't have to deal with seeing them also you won't accidentally upvote someone who is just spamming for example, someone might comment saying "followed, resteemed, and upvoted" but they actually did none of that. They will be flagged for spam by other people and for posting too much of the same thing. That will cause their comments to be hidden and or them be added to the blacklist.
It's pretty in-depth as to how they calculate what is or isn't spam. Here is what they said is checked to form the judgement

WOT creates a secure browsing environment, showing website security icons next to every URL & reputation alerts for unsafe websites. It's really nice to have because if anyone has ever reported a link you will see it right away as an overlay on the link. Everyone can add to the web of trust with their reviews.
