Today’s valentine and everybody seem to be focused on showing love to the opposite sex which means you might be scrambling to pick up a gift for your significant other, or trying to set up a last-minute date so you can feel some love on what’s supposed to be the most romantic day of the year. Hold up, hold up how about we take a minute or two to appreciate ourselves after all you can’t give what you don’t have. You can’t truly love another until you know how to love yourself.
Sixteen years….that’s how long it took me to fall in love with me and now I can’t stop loving the girl that looks back at me when I stand before the mirror. So permit me to disclose the reality about self-love that most people never will.
Self love is a mental scuffle you’ll have to battle every day. And on some days, most days, you may not win. Self love is encouraging yourself that you’re beautiful and that your scars don’t make you.
Self love will not make missing him/her any less painful.
Self love doesn’t mean the pain will leave in a day.
Self love doesn’t make you devoid of emotions.
Self love is no guarantee that on all days, you’ll look into the mirror and smile at the person staring back at you.
Most importantly, self love doesn’t mean that the urge to have someone to share your early mornings, late nights and all your little flaws and secrets with will disappear. Self love is not you not wanting to share connections with people, but the realization that you shouldn’t force them if they don’t want to.
Why not dedicate this day to loving yourself, you deserve it. Happy Valentine’s Day.
