I thought I'd take a snapshot of where we stand at the start of this year. The web stats are looking great. Steady growth over the last few months. I don't have a screenshot, but a year ago we had about 28,000 daily visitors and ranked around 16,000th. So, where do you think we will be a year from now? It's hard to guess, but I'm going to say 5 million daily visitors and a top 100 rank. I just checked and the BBC is currently at 102 with 3.4 million. Of course the whole scene may have changed by then and you may need a lot more visitors to rank that highly.
There's a lot of variation by country. Steemit is almost mainstream in the Republic of Korea and getting there in other territories. I know we have an active Nigerian community doing good work. In places with low wages it can change lives, but they need ways to turn earnings into things they need to survive. There's great potential for a global shift in wealth if we can reach less well off communities. There are challenges there in connectivity, availability of technology and education. That's much more interesting than a few people in richer countries getting even richer.
A year ago Steem was hovering around the top 10 cryptocurrencies. Now it struggles to stay in the top 40. I hope it will return to the top 10 in a year, but there's some stiff competition. A lot of coins are buoyed up by hype and speculation. I'm hoping we will see more of them finding real use cases. I still want to see Steem, or more likely, Steem Dollars used to buy and sell goods and services. There has been some of that already, but the inflated SBD has meant people tend to sell it immediately for Steem. It needs to get back to the proper pegged value of $1. I think Steem will continue to rise, but others may fall. Bitcoin may lose its dominance as it's not that useful as it stands. You would think that something with no fees and really fast transactions would be more popular. We shall see.
It's all uncharted territory. I don't think I made these sort of predictions last year, but if anyone did then let us know how you did.
