All those make a lot of sense. Definitely left out a lot in the above.
The point that hits me most is the immediate remuneration. In the past (and in the present in places), rewards were pretty strongly stepped. You either are among the few who get published, or you are among the unpublished masses. You are either among those who get a tenure-track job, or you perish as an adjunct. It's not just that there isn't as much room for smaller fish, it's also that you can't even tell if you're making progress until bang, you've made it. So yeah. Definitely will think about that.
