Forgiveness of Sins (10): Peter's First Sermon!
Text: Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
On the day of Pentecost, Peter together with other apostles and the Church were gathered together as Christ instructed and the Holy Spirit came. When the people were surprised and mocked them as people under the influence of wine, what did Peter do? He stood up and corrected them! How?
He established from verse 16-21 that what is happening had been prophesied and he quoted Joel. With that, the argument had been suppressed! He then proceeded in his sermon to explain the significance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus to humanity! It wasn't what they did out of anger perse, it had been prophesied and they were witnesses to the fulfillment! Acts 2:22 argued that they themselves know!
Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. God raised Jesus from death! Then Peter supported his argument with the scriptures: he quoted David Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. He explained what he quoted: Acts 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
After this, carefully see how Peter invited them: Peter says they should change their mind according to the scriptures he has quoted and receive remission of sins offered by Jesus! Then the Spirit of Christ would be the evidence of their salvation! What comes at salvation? Remission of sins! Peter established that in his first sermon.
