Fact about crabs
Did you know that seafood wastes like of crab's can produce chitin. This is a material that can be used by pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, water treatment, even household cleansers and soaps and etc.
Chitin (KI-tin)
Chitin is the horny substance found in the shells of crabs, outer coverings of insects, and hard parts of similar creatures and some plants. Pure chitin is a white powder which is very difficult to dissolve.
Chitin is a long chain of modified sugar molecules. The basic glucose molecule (sugar) has two new organic groups. These place one hydroxyl (OH) group in glucose. One is an Amino group (NH2). Amino groups occur in all proteins. The other is an acetyl group (COCH3). It is derived from acetic acid, commonly called vinegar.
There are a number of chemically treated chitin products now being used in many industries. Recently the drug, cosmetic and textile industries have been using modified chitin products as thickeners and protective coatings.
A general formula for chitin is C30H50N4O19, for which the molecular weight is 770.73.
